Baseball Blogging

We're down to four as the Indians eliminated the Yankees last night. For the record, that means I went 0-4 in my predictions. You might want to start looking for another sportsblog that knows something about sports.

Joe Torre's future - sounds like he is gone. I don't know how Torre can get the blame for the Yankees' troubles in the playoffs, but there will likely be a fall guy and it ain't going to be Steinbrenner. Didn't we know all year that the Yankees' starting rotation was going to be its downfall? They were terrible in this series. That is hardly Torre's fault, but it might be time to shake up the organization a bit. Word on the street is that Don Mattingly is the favorite, though Tony LaRussa is another possibility.

There is a story this morning that both Arizona playoff games aren't sold out or even close to being sold out. How is that possible? There was a time when Atlanta struggled to sellout its opening round, but that was also when Atlanta was going to the playoffs every year and the first round was a formality. This is for the World Series in a town that hasn't had good baseball in a few years. What is going on in Phoenix?

i can't explain thursday's game. although i'm not going because it's too pricy. friday's game is at 1:00, so that one may be tough. i heard on the radio this morning that they have about 12K left for both games. i'm not proud of this.

There are certain cities where this wouldn't surprise me (Atlanta, Miami, Oakland), but I thought the D-Backs had a strong local following. The 1:00 thing is understandable, but not Thursday night.

If there are 12,000 unsold tickets, I'll bet you can find a cheap ticket somewhere.

Even SportsCenter was dogging on Arizona tonight. What are they saying about it there? I have a hard time believing the games aren't selling out. Did the Cubs games sellout?

Maybe if ESPN would actually cover the Diamondbacks-- or anyone other than the Yankees-- they might spur enough interest to get the damn stadium filled. Why do I still watch Sportscenter, you might be asking? Because I can now fast forward what I don't care about, thank you god for DVRS!!. They make it pretty easy nowadays with their clever "SC Rundown" list. This was this morning's top of the hour list (granted it was a slow news cycle, but this is still ridiculous):

Joe Torre
Steinbrenner
Torre's Record
Keep Torre?
Torre's Future
Yankee Free Agents
Patriots Cowboys!!

I don't think ESPN made a mistake by not covering the D-Backs - they did cover Webb's streak pretty heavily. Baseball is a hard sport to cover because the season is so long without any really meaningful games until September. Everytime we declared somebody to be dead (Cubs, Yankees, Phillies), they arose again to get back into the hunt. You can't cover them all as contenders even if they all might be.

Now, I think we can all agree about the Yankee overkill. I'm not sure the Bush/Gore Supreme Court decision was analyzed as much as the one about Joe Torre's future. Seriously, it has to be a little embarassing even for Yankee fans.

as a fan of the torre yankee dynasty i have to say that i don't really care if he comes back or not. i sure as hell wouldn't if i were him. i have to think that if any of the other series had gone to 5 games, then the torre story wouldn't have been near as big this week. by the way, one of the local sports radio guys here in phoenix went off on diamondback fans that were embarassed because of our inability to sell out this week's games. his excuse is that the only thing that separates phoenix from southern california is the lack of a beach, and it's too laid back out here for anyone to care that much about sports. i was screaming at this guy in my car. the biggest problem that i can see is that everyone out here is a transplant (myself included) and they have brought their team loyalties with them. i have to admit, i don't plan on going to any sun devil games anytime soon.

i just found this on espn.com

Not selling out an NLCS game is nothing new for the D-backs. Arizona drew just 37,729 for Game 1 of the 2001 NLCS against the Braves.

the stadium holds close to 50k if you're wondering.
